PROJECT OVERVIEW

This unique backyard transformation began with a request to remove an old vinyl swimming pool. Their children grown and out of the house the family had outgrown the pool and were looking for a way to complement and accommodate their growing family gatherings without the commitment a swimming pool requires. Removing a large swimming pool and converting the space into a patio all the while maintaining adherence to municipal codes limiting impervious surfaces were a few of the challenges on the table.

Overlooking lake Minnetonka, situated on an idyllic lot this yard is graced with sweeping views of the bay to the south and framed by large stands of Sugar Maples to the North. We chose to enhance and frame these views as best we could. Working through the design process our clients allowed us to create a beacon for the family to return to and relax during the summer. A large curvilinear patio was planned to become the focal point for gathering. This was seated between a smaller, upper level patio that incorporated dining and cooking spaces, and a long enveloping seat wall. The seat wall terminates on one side of the patio just opposite of a custom, gas burning fireplace. Our plantings were a little unconventional when compared to current trends. With our clients retreating to warmer climes during our long winters it was important to them that all of the plantings be at fully glory during the few short months the home is occupied in the summer. This was a bit of a juxtaposition since most of our clients are usually looking for year-round color and interest. Nevertheless perennials, shrubs and trees were all selected to coordinate their blooms within a restricted window which required an added level of attention to detail. As a finishing touch we implemented a low voltage lighting scheme to excellent effect. Creating a subtle yet enlightening ambience that compliments the space without creating harsh shadows was the goal. When the project was finished our clients told us we “hit the nail on the head” and we agree!
