SERVICE OVERVIEW
Good Design is that which makes our lives better, simpler, richer. The finished product should invoke a sense of awe, wonder and relaxation. At Green Slate Design we strive to provide the opportunity to experience the refuge your home can offer. We do this through a unique approach called user-centered design. User-centered design is a process that involves you throughout the design process. By actively engaging our clients at each stage we are able to deliver a higher quality result that reflects your tastes, the architecture of your home or business and lifestyle. Communication with our clients throughout this process is key.
- Phone Consultation - The process begins from our very first conversation. We'll review our services, fees and discuss your project and its scope. If it sounds like we might be a good fit for each other a time to meet for an onsite consultation will be set and you'll receive a welcome packet via email shortly thereafter.
- Onsite Consultation - An introductory meeting at your home for us to get to know you and your family, discuss your vision, review your homes architecture, etc. Assuming we are a good fit a design agreement will be finalized and payment made to initiate the next phase.
- Information Gathering - This phase is really about discovery, your space and the surrounding areas are thoroughly examined, dimensions are recorded, images of the area and surrounding site are taken. Surveys and architectural documents are collected for the next step as well.
- Compiling & Digitizing - All of this information is then compiled, conceptualized and entered into a CAD program for the creation of a working document that will be refined throughout the process
- Presentation & Budgeting - The most exciting part of the design process, the initial presentation. Visions and challenges alike are brought to the forefront then put to the test of reality as the budget is reviewed and steps are laid as we move towards the next phase of the process
- Refinements - This is a transitory part of the process where the ideas and priorities discussed during the Presentation are brought to life.
- Contracting - Scope, Terms and final pricing before construction is laid out. Signatures are exchanged, down payments are made and the process of producing construction documents and installation scheduling begins.
Our design process is meant to be fun, engaging and thorough. We value education, artistic perspectives and clear and open communication just as much as our clients and our finished products show it.

POPULAR QUESTIONS
All designs are not created equal. All Designers and Landscape Architects are not equal in skill, education or experience. Design is a people driven process and good designers spend years and thousands of dollars educating themselves and honing their skills. The process of producing a design takes not only time but creativity and talent. Gathering site, municipality and property information, your vision and compiling all of this into a cohesive document that can be built from AND effectively communicates its ideas to a layperson is not an easy task. It truly is a valuable service, one that will save you time, money and frustration.
Depending on the scope of the project and the time of the season it can take anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks to complete a design.
It’s important to discuss budgets with your designer to ensure they are headed in the right direction before you get to the planning stage. The real answer to this question is often more complex than most people like to know. Size and scope are obvious indicators but just as important are the materials chosen, the municipality you live in and the timeline for construction. With these factors in consideration a small project can range anywhere from $5k-$8k while a large project can range between five and six figures.
Project timelines can vary significantly depending on many factors. Prevailing weather patterns, availability of skilled labor, materials chosen and the scope of a project all play a role. Generally most of our projects are completed in 1-4 weeks once construction has commenced.
